Portishead's self-titled second album from 1997 delivers darker, more aggressive trip-hop than their debut, with harsher drum machines and increasingly paranoid atmospheres. Beth Gibbons' vocals shift between vulnerable whispers and desperate wails over Geoff Barrow's claustrophobic production, creating some of the most unsettling and compelling electronic music of the '90s.
