Recorded on August 10 and October 4, 1967.
In re-teaming with the songwriting duo of Isaac Hayes and David Porter, Sam Moore and Dave Prater managed to once again catch lightning in a bottle with their 1967 effort SOUL MEN. Also known as Double Dynamite, Sam and Dave just fell short of crashing the top slot on the pop charts with the classic "Soul Man," a song that continued to crackle over a decade later when it was reintroduced to the public and pop charts via a Blues Brothers cover.
This smash is only the tip of this Southern soul iceberg that also contains the Prater-led call-and-response of "Broke Down Piece of Man," the brassy and sassy "I'm With You," and the mournful "Just Keep Holding On," featuring some major pleading by Sam Moore. More than on any other album, the duo's gospel influences come to the foreground on cuts such as the sanctified "Let It Be Me," with its dusting of organ and introductory mini-sermon, and "I've Seen What Loneliness Can Do," a perfect synergy of both men's emoting. SOUL MEN is quintessential Sam & Dave.
